"Battle for the Saddle"
Roger Musgrove Memorial
Sorting Event
On Feburary 27th and 28th 2016, Flying M Stables, LLC in Olympia, Washington is hosting a wonderful western equestrian event titled the “Battle for the Saddle” Roger Musgrove Memorial Ranch Sorting Jackpot. This will be an exciting competition with great prizes to be won by the fastest ranch sorters. This fun, family-friendly event is a tribute to the founder of Flying M Stables, Roger Musgrove, who passed away in February, 2011.
In addition to developing the Flying M Stables equestrian complex, Roger contributed greatly to the Western Washington community. He was a riding member of the Thurston County Sheriff’s Posse for more than 30 years. He was an avid sponsor of various youth programs, including 4-H and High School Equestrian Drill Teams, and was known for supporting many area businesses.
Roger was largely responsible for bringing the sport of Team Penning to Thurston County. Long before the sport became well-known, Roger began producing weekly practices at the equestrian complex he built at Flying M Stables. As more and more riders attended, he held jackpots, in which the fastest times for penning cattle won cash and prizes. Some jackpot nights, 200 pickup trucks pulling horse trailers would line up on Musgrove Drive, waiting to find a parking spot.
Many years later, when the sport of Ranch Sorting grew in popularity in Western Washington, Roger added that to his weekly events calendar. Roger believed in supporting all arenas around Washington by travelling to other cattle events, bringing riding partners with him, and doing his best to spread the word about what each arena had to offer to horse men and women.
The purpose of the “Battle for the Saddle” Roger Musgrove Memorial event is to pay tribute to a great cowboy by spending the day the way he spent many of his happiest days: a day full of fun, engaged in friendly competition, winning money and prizes and visiting with friends, family and fellow horse lovers.
Several weeks following Roger’s passing in 2011, Shannon and Sandie Pearson, Roger’s son-in-law and daughter who are the current owners/managers of Flying M Stables, hosted a Ranch Sorting Memorial practice. With little more than word-of-mouth advertising, 80 riders showed up and participated, with many more non-participants lending their support and sharing memories.
This February, entrants in the Open, Amateur and Novice classes will share a 60 percent payback of entry fees plus added money. Last year over $5000.00 in cash and prizes were awarded to participants. The grand prize is a beautiful Teskey Roping saddle, valued at $1,650, which will be awarded to the top sorter.
